An in-home exercise program that works!
By Michelle Rahn
I have found an in-home workout system that works! I have tried many workout tapes/dvds that were "better than nothing" but didn't really provide consistent results. Part of problem was boredom with the routine. Part of the problem was that many tape/dvd work-outs are too "dancey" for me, and I found them difficult to follow (grapevine left, 4 steps, tap tap, reach right, turn, etc...). My friend Katrina told me she was doing P90X and that she was really getting fit using the system. I had never heard of them before, even though there are infomercials (actually worth watching, they are true user stories). I bought the P90X set off Ebay BeachBody videos and started it in November, 2009. What's great about this series is that there are 12 different DVDs with completely different (but demanding) workouts. This is what is in P90X: How to Bring it: about committment to doing it regularly 01: Chest and Back 02: Plyometrics (jumping/explosive exercises) 03: Shoulders and Arms 04: Yoga (and this is no sissy yoga either. My husband who rides mountain bikes every weekend only made it 30 minutes into this 90 minute workout) 05: Legs and back 06: Kenpo X (kickboxing type of workout) 07: Stretch 08: Core synergistics (core=abdomen, back, trunk, hips) 09: Chest, shoulders & triceps 10: Back and biceps 11: Cardio 12: Ab ripper The program is extrememly intense, and the advice in the beginning is "consult your doctor before beginning this program" which is certainly to be taken seriously. I didn't realize how intense it was before I got it, and I was not able to complete a whole DVD at first, even though I was in "reasonable" (but not good) shape. If you want to start somewhere before this series, there was a predecessor which is called Power 90 (Sculpt-weights and strength, and Cardio) in 2 levels Circuit 1-2 (beginning) and 3-4 more advanced. If I had known more, I would have started here, though in truth the P90X uses much of the same sorts of exercises, but more of them (or longer duration). So, you could just get the P90X DVDs and accept that you may not be able to do all the exercises at first. There are a wide variety of related workouts (see Beachbody.com for more information). I also have recently acquired Yoga-Booty-Ballet which is good too, and Kathy Smith's Project You (strength: full body circuit). My results: I have used the DVDs about 3 times a week, and have not changed my eating habits (which were already reasonably healthy) and I have not lost weight, but I have lost volume! Clothes continue to get a bit looser every week, and last week someone stopped me in the hall and said "you look healthy!". To really get "infomercial" results, you need to do the workouts 5-6 days per week and eat smartly (in any case, ditch the sodas, sugar and lots of carbs). My arms have good definition, my waistline is significantly smaller (no rolls over the waistband) and my legs are a lot stronger (and more defined). My chiropractor said this is making a big difference in my overall health, as I am not "falling apart" in between visits like I used to before I started this. If you are interested in a plan that you can do at home, this is a good option. All things considered, the P90X series is not very expensive and will probably give better results than a gym membership. You will need some hand weights (I use 5lb) and/or resistance bands (I use medium). |

WOW, great program information, Michelle. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work. Frederick
This sounds like a good series of DVD's Michelle. Of course we often look at out weight and wonder why it hasn't gone down, but forget that muscle weighs more than fat, so as we build muscle, the fat decreases, and although we gradually attain a better shape we might not always lose weight. My guideline is when I do the belt up on my trousers. If it is a struggle to reach the hole that I normally use, then I know I am putting on weight. If my belt is loose, then I know I am going in the right direction. I also just started to use the Wii Fit at home, and this is really fun to do, in fact my fiancee almost fell off the chair watching me trying to twirl a virtual hula hoop. I wrote about my Wii Fit Experiences, hope you enjoy it.
